(Vatican Radio) The bishop's task is to pray and to proclaim the Resurrection of Jesus; if a bishop does not pray and does not announce the Gospel but is concerned with other things, God's people suffer. That’s the message Pope Francis imparted to the faithful gathered Friday for the daily morning Mass at the Casa Santa Marta.

Bishops have two jobs: to pray and to preach

"The Church without the bishop doesn’t work," said the Pope. The Pope invited the faithful to pray for “us bishops, because we too are sinners; we too have weaknesses. We also have the danger of Judas: because he too had been elected as a column. We also run the risk of not praying, of doing something else instead of proclaiming the Gospel and casting out demons ... Pray, so that the bishops are what Jesus desired, so that we all give witness to Jesus’ Resurrection. The people of God pray for the bishops. In every Mass we pray for the bishops.
교황님께서는 미사 참석한 신도들에게, 우리 주교들을 위하여 기도해 달라고 청하셨습니다. 그 이유는 우리 주교들역시 죄인들이며, 허약하기 때문입니다. 우리 주교들역시 유다스의 위험을 지니고 있으면서, 교회의 기둥으로 선발되었기 때문입니다. 우리 주교들역시 기도하지 않는 위험과, 복음을 선포하고 마귀를 쫓아내는 일,,,등의 일 대신에 다른 일들을 하는 위험 속을 달리고 있기 때문입니다. 예수님께서 열망하시는 것이 무엇인지, 그래서 예수님의 부활을 우리 모두가 증거할 수 있도록 기도해주시기 바랍니다. 하느님의 백성은 자신들의 주교들을 위하여 기도해야 합니다. 그래서 미사 때마다 우리는 주교들을 위하여 기도합니다.
We pray for Peter, the head of the college of bishops, and we pray for our local bishop. But this is not enough: we say the name, and many times we say it out of habit, and then we go on. Pray for the bishop with your heart! Ask the Lord: Lord, take care of my bishop; take care of all the bishops, and send us bishops who are true witnesses - bishops who pray and bishops who help us through their preaching to understand the Gospel, so that we may trust that you, Lord, are alive and that you're with us ".
우리는 주교단의 머리가 되는 베드로를 위하여 기도하며, 각 교구장 주교를 위하여 기도합니다. 그러나 이것만으로는 충분하지 못합니다. 즉, 주교 이름을 부르며 기도하지만, 흔히 습관적으로 하고 있습니다. 여러분은 마음속으로 기도해야 합니다. 우리 주님께 간청합시다; 주님 우리 주교님을 보살펴주십시오! 강론을 통하여 우리가 복음을 알아듣도록 우리를 도와주는 모든 주교님들을 보살펴주십시오! 그리하여 주님께서 살아계시고, 우리와 함께 계시다는 것을 우리가 신뢰할 수 있게 하여주소서!

Francesco: se il vescovo non prega, il popolo di Dio soffre

Compito del vescovo è quello di pregare e annunciare la Risurrezione di Gesù; se il vescovo non prega e non annuncia il Vangelo ma si occupa di altre cose, il popolo di Dio ne soffre: è quanto ha affermato il Papa nella Messa del mattino a Casa Santa Marta. Il servizio di Sergio Centofanti:
Il Vangelo del giorno (Mc 3, 13-19) racconta la scelta dei Dodici Apostoli da parte di Gesù: li sceglie “perché stiano con Lui e per mandarli a predicare con il potere di scacciare i demoni”. I Dodici - afferma Papa Francesco - “sono i primi vescovi”. Dopo la morte di Giuda viene eletto Mattia: è “la prima ordinazione episcopale della Chiesa”. “I vescovi sono colonne della Chiesa”, chiamati ad essere testimoni della Risurrezione di Gesù:
“Noi vescovi abbiamo questa responsabilità di essere testimoni: testimoni che il Signore Gesù è vivo, che il Signore Gesù è risorto, che il Signore Gesù cammina con noi, che il Signore Gesù ci salva, che il Signore Gesù ha dato la sua vita per noi, che il Signore Gesù è la nostra speranza, che il Signore Gesù ci accoglie sempre e ci perdona. La testimonianza. La nostra vita dev’essere questo: una testimonianza. Una vera testimonianza della Resurrezione di Cristo”.
I vescovi – ha proseguito il Papa – hanno due compiti:
“Il primo compito del vescovo è stare con Gesù nella preghiera. Il primo compito del vescovo non è fare piani pastorali … no, no! Pregare: questo è il primo compito. Il secondo compito è essere testimone, cioè predicare. Predicare la salvezza che il Signore Gesù ci ha portato. Due compiti non facili, ma sono propriamente questi due compiti che fanno forti le colonne della Chiesa. Se queste colonne si indeboliscono perché il vescovo non prega o prega poco, si dimentica di pregare; o perché il vescovo non annuncia il Vangelo, si occupa di altre cose, la Chiesa anche si indebolisce; soffre. Il popolo di Dio soffre. Perché le colonne sono deboli”.
“La Chiesa senza vescovo non può andare” – conclude il Papa – per questo “la preghiera di tutti noi per i nostri vescovi è un obbligo, ma un obbligo d’amore, un obbligo dei figli nei confronti del Padre, un obbligo di fratelli, perché la famiglia rimanga unita nella confessione di Gesù Cristo, vivo e risorto”:
“Per questo, io vorrei oggi invitare voi a pregare per noi vescovi. Perché anche noi siamo peccatori, anche noi abbiamo debolezze, anche noi abbiamo il pericolo di Giuda: perché anche lui era stato eletto come colonna. Anche noi corriamo il pericolo di non pregare, di fare qualcosa che non sia annunciare il Vangelo e scacciare i demoni … Pregare, perché i vescovi siano quello che Gesù voleva, che tutti noi diamo testimonianza della Resurrezione di Gesù. Il popolo di Dio prega per i vescovi. In ogni Messa si prega per i vescovi: si prega per Pietro, il capo del collegio episcopale, e si prega per il vescovo del luogo. Ma questo è poco: si dice il nome e tante volte si dice per abitudine, e si va avanti. Pregare per il vescovo con il cuore, chiedere al Signore: Signore, abbi cura del mio vescovo; abbi cura di tutti i vescovi, e mandaci i vescovi che siano veri testimoni, vescovi che preghino, e vescovi che ci aiutino, con la loro predica, a capire il Vangelo, a essere sicuri che Tu, Signore, sei vivo, sei fra noi”.
